  • The Zanzibar Gazette Offices.

During a short lived period stamps for use in British East Africa, of Zanzibar were over printed at the offices of the Zanzibar Gazette.

The approximate period was 1895 to 1897 however philatelic information seems somewhat sparse in relation to the Gazette offices.

Their must be photographs of the building at that time, detail as to the quantity of Zanzibar stamps that were over printed and their values, detail of the offices themselves, and even what has happened to them.

Some of the equipment that was used created by accident a number of errors, these although catalogued by Messer’s Stanley Gibson, I believe are simply the tip of the iceberg as presumably the compositors of the day dealt with both Arabic and English characters, so creating such fascinating overprints as Zanzidar with an Arabic character for the letter R.

Others were simply a mix of serif used, punctuation and so on.

Here is a philatelic subject that you may be able to shed more light on than that which I have and my interest in the offices.

    Regards

  • We are not philatelists… I do have a great collection of German beer coasters though! Over 200 different kinds.

  • I realise this to be the case, and my sincere apologies if I have caused disturbance at the ‘Gazette’.

I cast my net and one day I shall find the fish, who could be lurking amongst both friend and foe.

    Thank you.

    Jeffrey
