In November 1956, Soviet tanks rolled into Budapest to quash a rebellion against communist rule. The West did nothing to aid the people who were willing to die under Soviet tanks for the liberty. Barry Goldwater wrote in The Conscience of a Conservative (1960) that in such a situation:
