Choices and Capitalism

Though we love capitalism and it´s way of creating prosperity and freedom we sometimes stumble upon some downsides. The idea of economies of scale, that the  advantage of producing large quantities often makes firms more productive and profitable (and products cheaper), sometimes makes certain markets dull.
Two examples. First; the car industry. Auto makers the last [...]

Glommys Midnight Thoughts VII

Scientists have found that tequila, when heated, forms small diamonds. Elton John once said (or was it Bernie Taupin who wrote it for him?) “It´s like trying to drink whiskey from a bottle of wine”. This doesn´t seem that unlikely after this discovery, and makes me think; What other answers lures in the bottom of a [...]

Glomgolds Thoughts VI

Many companies have seen their profits decline during this credit crisis, but not luxury companies. I find this exciting, why is this? It could be due to a growing middle and upper class in Asia, but I think it´s a shift in standards and taste as well.
The economic report of LVMH, with brands such as [...]

Glomgolds thoughts III

This is really really sick… Dow down by -7,3 %, today, – 35 % this year.
This is survival of the fittest. The drunk plumber was wrong when he said “the stock market can´t go down more now”. The only solid market right now seems to be the gold market.

Up Around the Bend

Asset Managers could go emo for less than this. However, as Mr Rockerduck writes, there are a lot of things than shines in these dark times; Inflation is under control (In the western world) and the risk of stagflation is minimal. Companies are profitable and the stock market is cheap (In fact, it’s on sale). [...]

The Boring Auto Market of Today

Automobile advertizing is getting more and more boring. Long time since I last noticed a major car company marketing a non sports car by emphasizing horse power or acceleration. Even comfort, safety, design and driving pleasure seems to be secondary to the CO2 emmitance these days.
As I enter the web pages of manufacturers like Toyota, Ford, [...]

Principles and Practice of L. Glomgold

Please allow me to introduce myself. I’m the curve bender here at The Zanzibar Gazette, a supply-sider who enjoys the good in life.
I live in a small open economy, listens to 70´s and 80´s rock music, believe in god, votes right wing, loves riding, food, drinks, movies, caffeine, shopping, stock trading and fishing.
I mainly write about economical [...]

A new socialist era?

Tomorrow the House of Representatives decides whether  the new bill will pass. The Republicans are in a kind of ideological clash (Bloomberg) and for many of them the bill is pure distilled socialism.
I wrote earlier that I sense a global distrust of capitalism, a new left wing movement as that of 1968 is nothing we [...]

Glomgolds thoughts 2

RFSU, the swedish lobby for sexual promiscuity writes a debate article in todays (Svenska Dagbladet). For non swedes to understand RFSU´s agenda; their utopia is described in Genesis 18:20.
In the debate article published today Åsa Regnér, generalsekreterare of RFSU, thinks the right for religious institutions to conduct marriages should be revoked. This due to “discrimination” [...]

Glomgolds notes – 25/9

The various bannings of short selling continues to harm financial markets and to create uncertainty (Handelsblatt) as predicted. Also Mr. Bush speaks of a “long and painful recession” (Financial Times).
In these days of darkness we yearn for light. I hope that light will be the outcome of the American presidential election and an economic recovery. [...]
