El Hombre de las Dificultades

Mr Chávez of Venezuela continues his path towards communism. The latest move is a nationalization of the local rice operations of US company Cargill Inc. (WSJ) It’s hard to tell whether the line is already crossed from socialism to totalitarian communism but the  idea of military ensured price controls gives a hint.

New times?

Is Reaganism dead? We have been told from various left wing media that is the case. Tax cuts only makes the wealthy more wealthy. The cure for a recession is government spending and to make sure the right people gain from the upcoming prosperity, the new president blesses the people with “new change”. New change [...]

Re: More Theft

Answer to the post by Mr Rockerduck below. (The Zanzibar Gazette)
I agree, higher taxes most certainly do not cure a recession. But if the higher taxes are followed by an increase in government spending it won´t necessarly harm the economy shortsighted as also private consumption follows from the public spending through multiplicators. Hence also socialistic [...]

European Ultra-Leftist Music Awards

I accidently watched parts of the MTV European Music Awards and I have to say, I got really surprised of the sudden interest in American politics. The hosts all wore Obama shirts and at one point a gigantic picture of the President elect appeared on the big screen above the stage. I also heare they gave him [...]

Everything but a Waste

Today, I heard someone refer to a margin tax reduction as a “waste of money”, as it didn´t stimulate labour supply enough. How can a tax reduction be seen as a waste of money? A tax reduction is not primarily a waste of government funds but an increase in the part of your income you can consume or [...]

8 million new jobs!

Senator Obama has written an article in the Wall Street Journal. The article is named “The change we need” and it is very straight forward for an Obama statement, I must say. He does point out the main ”changes” needed in his presumed presidency. Some highlights below.
“We’ll create two million new jobs”
- The American people will [...]

The Glomgold Tax Model

In response to Mr Rockerducks utopic tax system I present my own. The model is based on three principles:

Fairness
A small government
Growth

As the government has to provide defense, a juridical framework, some goods not provided by the market as a police force, roads and some wellfare the 10 % tax of part of the workforce as Mr [...]

Odds

The odds right now (Ladbrokes) for the presidential election is;
Obama – 1.20       Mccain 4,33
That´s not comforting, I wonder how they came up with that?

Swedish Update

The leading Swedish opposition party, the Social Democrats (s) says they will try to form a coalition government with the Environmentalist Party (Miljöpartiet) in 2010 and will not cooperate with the Communists (Vänsterpartiet, v) any longer. (Svenska Dagbladet)
This sounds good to many swedes because the majority really don´t want (v) to govern, but this knowledge may strengthen the [...]

Bad Moon Rising

This is not a pleasant time to be reflecting on events in the world.
First of all, more banking chaos today. Both banks of Scotland (RBS and HBOS) plungend today (The Financial Times). Beyond the North and Norwegian Seas, the Icelandic government nationalised Landsbanki only a week after it did the same to Glitnir (FT).
Secondly, McCain [...]
